Connecticut Science Center

The Connecticut Science Center, scheduled to open in 2008, will be a world-class science learning center designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, teachers, inventors, and better informed citizens.

Overlooking the Connecticut river in Hartford, the magnificent structure will feature over 200 engaging, hands-on exhibits on all aspects of science, including engineering, communications, and the mysteries of deep space and the Connecticut River. Among the galleries at the Science Center will be Planet Earth, Exploring Space, The Picture of Health, Invention Dimension, a 3D cinema, and more, each featuring interactive activities designed for all ages.

On January 18, 2007, the Northeast Utilities Foundation announced a grant of $1 million—the largest in the foundation's history—to fund Forces in Motion, a gallery showcasing the physics of motion. Visitors to Forces in Motion will operate a ball-throwing robot, build a vehicle that hovers over its track by magnetic levitation, design and fly a helicopter, and experiment with a high speed video camera that captures motion at 1,000 frames per second.

Beyond its impact on education and science, the $150 million center—designed using innovative principles of "green" energy technology—will also serve as a magnet, drawing visitors to Hartford and the surrounding region and providing incentive for further economic development. “The generosity and the commitment of the Northeast Utilities Foundation is helping to realize a state-of-the-art facility that will provide local benefit while becoming a key destination for visitors to Hartford,” said Dr. Theodore S. Sergi, president and chief executive officer of the Connecticut Science Center.

The Northeast Utilities Foundation grant is in line with its goals of promoting education, the environment, and efforts that enhance the vitality of our communities.
